Responding to challenging behaviour in young people    Swords Oct 15

This training addresses the issue of responding to challenging behaviour in a youth work context. It begins by exploring what are challenging behaviours and who tends to exhibit them. It then focuses on dealing with the issue at an organisational level as research demonstrates that one of the most effective ways of countering challenging behaviour is by developing an environment which promotes positive behaviour. Factors contributing to such an environment include the development of a strengths-based ethos which actively values and celebrates the individual, having clear expectations and policies around behaviour which are implemented consistently by all staff, the use of positive incentives, and the importance of good support systems for both young people and staff. Participants undertake an “organisational audit” in relation to these factors in order to identify strengths and areas for improvement. The latter half of the training focuses on dealing with instances of challenging behaviour and explores principles such as consciously remaining calm, removing the audience factor, stating desired behaviour, listening and acknowledging feelings, and implementing sanctions fairly and consistently. The importance of supervision and supporting staff through challenging behaviour will also be highlighted.  As part of an ongoing research project, participants will be offered an opportunity to participate in a follow up meeting to review progress in implementing strategies.

This workshop is designed for managers and practitioners.
